Our Ancestors

Notes

Thomas George Roycroft

In 1901 (based on census data of that year) he ived at 14 Randolph St. , Manchester, United Kingdom with Mother(53) and brother (23) at age 16. Worked for railroad.
Immigrated in 1906 based on US census data
Father from UK , mother from Ireland [1920 cens]
A daughter of Thomas [Mary Alice] has related how he would attempt to stow away on ships bound for the US because he was unable to raise fare for the trip. He was caught several times in the process and deported from ship . Thomas and his brother [Joseph] were able to eventually serve as stewards on a ship by shining shoes etc. to gain their passage. This might explain why he and his brother do not show on a passenger list as yet. Perhaps they were part of the "crew" and avoided the immigration details when they jumped ship on arrival.
